The idea I settled on was my Asian-American identity, but how I wrote about this broad idea really evolved through my drafts. I chose to write about it because it was so integral to my identity through my extracurriculars and my experiences growing up as an Asian immigrant in the American South. I know my curiosity to understand the world around me nurtures my love for science. It is what motivated me to read about 2D kinematics to win a projectile motion challenge, and understand the chemistry behind qualitative analysis of cations for a lab. The reality is in the world of college access, itâs become harder. â At thirteen, I was caught between my Peranakan roots and American upbringing, unable to understand the idea of being both Asian and American. After a decade of living in America, I donât understand why Iâm still a foreigner. Donât be afraid to ask your friends, teachers, or a trusted adult for advice. I was a prisoner in my own home and felt like livestock, bred to be a source of income for my parentsâ future comfort.
